#TiempoDeActuar – climate conference in Madrid

Tiempo de actuar – it is time to act!

This is the guiding principle of the current climate conference in Spain, which can be followed live at unfccc.int/cop25. The 25th "Conference of the Parties" - COP 25 for short - will take place from the 2nd to 13th of December, 2019 in Madrid. Based on the results of Paris and Katowice, the key theme of the conference is the finalization of the agreement between the contracting states. Although much of the regulatory framework has already been prepared, most of the previous conferences have excluded the provision of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. This provides, for example, different cooperative mechanisms for emission reductions. Specifically, these are:

  • The transfer of bilateral emission reductions between institutions
  • International emission trading with public and private participants (SDM - Sustainable Development Mechanism)
  • Non-market based mechanisms

The individual mechanisms aim to implement emission reductions or to finance them in other states (if this is cheaper there).

It is obvious that the climate change and energy transition are necessary, and the possibilities for implementation are manifold. Policy measures such as COP25 are a building block of this. In addition to personal opportunities through conscious use of energy, the greatest possible use of renewable energy and the continuous questioning of one's own nutritional and consumer behavior it is also a great option, to revise one’s professional development. In the MSc "Renewable Energy Systems" the participants get a comprehensive insight into the social, technical and economic possibilities. On the one hand on the most up-to-date scientific level at a number of universities and on the other hand in direct exchange with practitioners and pioneers of the renewable energy scene from Europe. Energize your future!
