Alumni Voice: Anton Tsenov

Anton Tsenov, MSc, Alumnus of the MSc Renewable Energy Systems Class 2015-2017, shares with us his reasons to study this program, how he stumbled across this MSc Program and his enthusiasm for renewable energies.

Why did you decide to participate in this program?
I had been working for more than 20 years in the area of electrical engineering worldwide and had just finished a part time bachelor study program in applied electronics in Vienna with specialisation in green technologies and renewable energy. I was looking for master degree programs enabling me to continue my education in this area. Honestly speaking, at that time, despite having working at the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) for 4 years, I hadn´t known that directly here at the TU Wien has been offered for 10 years a continuing education program in renewable energy systems. I saw the advertisement by coincidence when the doors of a U-tube train had closed just before my nose and the train left. I remained waiting at the station straight opposite the ad. At the next days spending more time in researching on and gaining additional information about this study program I realised that it exactly matches to my expectations. As people saying “one door closes and another opens”

What did you expect and were your expectations met?
I expected to obtain clearly defined and specialised international knowledge of researching and utilizing of renewable energy without having to study to much additional “soft skills” stuff. The combination of theory with the practical experience gained during organised excursions and country modules even exceeded my expectations. The part time study form is an additional plus enabling one to hold down his job or/and participate in the program coming for the separated study modules from abroad.

How did you benefit personally and/or professionally from the program?
In our group of 14 students, everyone had a different country of origin, cultural background and various areas of professional expertise. Continents like Asia, Europe, Africa, South and North America were represented. To study and work together with my colleagues on diverse topics, projects and homework was not only an opportunity, pleasure and personally extension but also an honour.

Do you have any advice for future students?
Just do it! If we speak “only” about the sun, its energy coming to the Earth surface and gained to 100% in 45 minutes is enough to cover the annual energy demand of our planet. Is it not fascinating?! And what about the Hydro, Wind and Geothermal power, Biomass, …  and all the others new energy sources (already researched and not yet). Come in, join, discover and enjoy!
