Keep electricity going – a visit at Austrian Power Grid

On Thursday, 6th of September, the students of the MSc program Renewable Energy Systems visited Austrian Power Grid. Austrian Power Grid manages Austria`s high-voltage grid. APGrid Control was commissioned in southeast Vienna in 2009. It forms the nerve centre of the Austrian transmission grid. The facility is characterised by its striking architecture but also by the modern and state-of-the-art technology that is employed. All grid information pertaining to the Austrian transmission grid is collected and processed in the new control centre. Already on their way to the Control Centre they got the first insights of the Austrian Power Grid when past the huge distribution station in front of the main building.

The tour guide DI Kurt Misak welcomed the group coffee and breakfast prepared for the students which they were very thankful for! After an lively and interesting presentation on the work of Austrian Power Grid, students got a look through a window inside the head office of the Control Center. Due to the international exchange of electricity in the deregulated European electricity market, the activities of Austrian Power Grid AG extend well beyond the national frontiers. The students took the chance to talk to an expert on the grid to ask all their questions and get first hand practical insights At noon they went back to Bruck/Leitha for another afternoon of classes on the integration of renewable energy into the energy system.

On Saturday, 8th of September, their last day of lectures at our partner Energiepark Bruck/Leitha came to an end, but the students were also happy to be able to relax after an intense week of lectures and excursions. Their next module in October will be “Efficient Energy Use & Thermal Building Optimization”.

Energiepark’s team is excited to have them back in Bruck/Leitha soon!
