Elizabeth Rodriguez Bringas
Student Class 2016 - 2018

I decided to do a Master in renewable energy, because it is the key to solve many of the current social problems worldwide. For this reason I enrolled to The MSc “Renewable Energy Systems” at TU Wien, and after almost a year here, I can say it is an excellent program that focuses in 3 very important areas: the technical aspect, the policies and social impacts and the economical aspect of renewable energies. This makes it a very complete program with professors that are already experts in these technologies and have years of experience working directly with them, giving an opportunity for networking and mentoring but also learning about the real challenges and difficulties that you will face in the path towards decarbonization in the energy sector. Since this program is international it also allows you to meet people from all places of the world that are united by the same passion and interest to make a change in the way energy is produced, delivered but also in the way it is used. It is a great opportunity to meet people who are already working and share experience and ideas. I recommend this program to anyone who is interested in starting a career in renewable energy.

Jaidev Dhavle
Alumnus Class 2015 - 2017

Why did you decide to participate in this program?
I have had a passion for Renewable Energy since high-school and during my Bachelors and first Masters I studied and learnt about renewable energy in a very scientific and technical way. When I came across this Master Programme - I decided to participate in it because it offered to give student the whole picture on the Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development Sector - more specifically it was the ideal blend of theoretical knowledge and its practical application.

What did you expect and were your expectations met?
My expectation for this program was to gain more knowledge on the practical aspects of renewable energy viz. information on how policies & laws are developed, financing of RE projects, development of business plans and field visits to renewable energy project sites. Upon completion of this program I can say confidently that my expectations were successfully met.

How did you benefit personally and/or professionally from the program?
Personally, this program enabled me to build upon my existing renewable energy knowledge base as well as get further in-depth knowledge in this area. Professionally this program allowed me to interact with experts in this sector and learn about career opportunities + trends. Moreover, I can know say that I am proficient in Renewable Energy Systems when making job applications - my profile has become more attractive to prospective Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development employers upon completion on of this programme.

Do you have any advice for future students?
Future prospective students who have a serious interest in Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development will benefit highly from this programme as the contents taught are very relevant and informative. This programme will definetly enable you to be engaged with the international Renewable Energy and Sustainable Development community. I also believe the close relationships that are built between classmates, programme staff and lecturer's makes the programme very active. Just be ready to work hard but remember also have fun and seize opportunities which arise.

Roxana Predoiu
Alumna Class 2015 - 2017

My decision to enroll in the Renewable Energy Systems MSc Program with CEC TU Wien was triggered by a combination of factors: a goal of shifting my 25-year career in IT Systems towards sustainable development projects, and to contribute to mitigating the effects of anthropogenic climate change effects and human population increase, at a time when these topics are more consequential than ever.
This Program seemed to me the perfect investment and educational opportunity to gain valuable knowledge about Renewable Energy Systems, while still working full-time and having an active family life.

In my opinion, what makes this Program particularly attractive and useful is that it offers a diversity of perspectives, covering the Renewable Energy Systems in an analytical, multifaceted, and comprehensive manner, through extensive readings, intensive lectures and very interesting field trips, in the company of  some of the best experts in these areas.

At the end of it, I would not consider myself an expert in any of the studied areas, but I am confident I have gained extremely valuable knowledge, and have built a solid foundation, to pragmatically help me getting involved with sustainable development projects, in the near future.

Ulrich Tschiesche
Alumnus Class 2015 - 2017

I had already some background in environmental engineering and sciences when I found that by digging deeper into the field of renewable energies, energy efficiency, mobility and other related topics I could further improve my competence in - and understanding of - today’s and future global challenges. The program “Renewable Energy Systems” is well structured and coordinated. It provides up to date technical and economical insights on topics related to renewable energy which enabled me to further move in this direction.

Furthermore, I came to know more closely my program colleges which all came from different countries and shared the same passion for the “renewables”. The program also provides opportunities for Alumnis like me to stay updated and exchange with new and former students by attending the REN talks or new lectures. I can recommend the program!

Anton Tsenov
Alumnus Class 2015 - 2017

Why did you decide to participate in this program?
I had been working for more than 20 years in the area of electrical engineering worldwide and had just finished a part time bachelor study program in applied electronics in Vienna with specialisation in green technologies and renewable energy. I was looking for master degree programs enabling me to continue my education in this area. Honestly speaking, at that time, despite having working at the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) for 4 years, I hadn´t known that directly here at the TU Wien has been offered for 10 years a continuing education program in renewable energy systems. I saw the advertisement by coincidence when the doors of a U-tube train had closed just before my nose and the train left. I remained waiting at the station straight opposite the ad. At the next days spending more time in researching on and gaining additional information about this study program I realised that it exactly matches to my expectations. As people saying “one door closes and another opens”

What did you expect and were your expectations met?
I expected to obtain clearly defined and specialised international knowledge of researching and utilizing of renewable energy without having to study to much additional “soft skills” stuff. The combination of theory with the practical experience gained during organised excursions and country modules even exceeded my expectations. The part time study form is an additional plus enabling one to hold down his job or/and participate in the program coming for the separated study modules from abroad.

How did you benefit personally and/or professionally from the program?
In our group of 14 students, everyone had a different country of origin, cultural background and various areas of professional expertise. Continents like Asia, Europe, Africa, South and North America were represented. To study and work together with my colleagues on diverse topics, projects and homework was not only an opportunity, pleasure and personally extension but also an honour.

Do you have any advice for future students?
Just do it! If we speak “only” about the sun, its energy coming to the Earth surface and gained to 100% in 45 minutes is enough to cover the annual energy demand of our planet. Is it not fascinating?! And what about the Hydro, Wind and Geothermal power, Biomass, …  and all the others new energy sources (already researched and not yet). Come in, join, discover and enjoy!

Mag. (FH) Julia Schmidmayer
Alumna Class 2013-2015

I applied for the Master Program Renewable Energy Systems in order to enhance my knowledge in the field of renewable technologies and their integration into different level of energy systems (e.g. buildings, networks, cities). This Master Program gives a basic technical knowledge in the area of renewable energy production and enables its students to gain a better understanding of design, planning and operation of energy technologies.

The course covers a wide variety of different technologies and offers a good mix of lecturers from academia, practitioners and project operators. As the lectures are highly condensed in time and content and only enrolled part-time it is still possible to full-time work in my profession. Right from the beginning of the Master Program I was able to use the knowledge gained in my daily work life. Especially the case studies that we needed to elaborate in the second term of the course provided me a better insight into the interaction of different energy technologies.

I can recommend this Master Program to people that are highly interested in future challenges and possibilities in relation to the transformation of our energy system.

My motivation to participate in the MSc program "Renewable Energy Systems” was to combine the technical know-how of the course with my economic and financial background in order to gain a holistic understanding of projects in the field of Renewable Energies.

The combination of preparatory work, lectures, tests, homeworks and master´s thesis over a time span of two years guarantees that not only sustainable topics are dealt with, but that also the acquired knowledge will hopefully be sustainable.  With a good portion of enthusiasm and a little assistance and understanding of the employer and the family, the course can be finished beside family and job without great sacrifice.

The whole CEC-team responsible for the course gave the students a great assistance wherever possible.  Almost having finished the course I can now say that my expectations were perfectly met. The course provided me with a deep insight in the various technologies related to renewable energy topics and in the interactions between technologic, legal and economic REN-aspects.

In addition, I enlarged my network and specially gained a whole “master-class” of new friends, which is priceless.

I had the pleasure to participate in this unique program in its first matriculation year 2005. From the very beginning this program was highly valuable while also improving permanently due to maturity, most recently honored by the ASIIN accreditation.

Our energy system will face fundamental changes in the upcoming decades. Around 50 years ago, the cornerstones of today's energy supply and power plant portfolio have been defined. But now it is time to initiate the development of energy systems for the next 50 years. An increasing number of humans consume an increasing amount of energy. The energy demand is predicted to double until 2050 while hydrocarbon resources are limited and too precious to be just burned, apart from the impact of their carbon emissions.
